"It was the latest in a series of mass killings that have shocked the United States, where gun ownership is widespread and the right to possess arms is a fiercely contested constitutional issue currently on the agenda of the Supreme Court."
I note that the story implies a highly distorted picture. There has not been a "series of mass killings." It did not "shock the United States." You can't "shock" a country; you can only shock individuals. Gun ownership in the US is widespread, but gun carrying is not. I bet there were not more than three people in the entire mall carrying guns, and they were probably all security guards or off-duty police officers. And what the hell does "fiercely contested" even mean?
I think we would have a much safer country if more people carried guns. For example, suppose 90% of the people in that Omaha mall were carrying. This guy steps off the elevator, shoots someone, and a dozen good citizens draw their weapons and handle the problem in about three seconds. Result: two dead people, not seven, or whatever the final number turns out to be.
I believe that vast majority of our citizens are honest, peaceful, and want to do the right thing. When one of our fellow human beings goes berserk and starts shooting people, it is too late for coddling and "help." It's time for instant self-defense and it is time to remove that individual from our society.
