The Toilet Seat Issue

Most people are aware of the toilet seat controversy and conversation in our culture. Women say it should be down; men say women should get over it. I think most men want to please, protect, and provide for their women, and they will do a myriad of things that don't make much sense to themselves (the men) merely to maintain a tolerable level of tranquility with their mate.

The trouble with the toilet seat issue is that women don't give men the real reason they want it down. (Hint: It has nothing to do with convenience.) The real reason is that women pay a huge amount of attention to looking good. Their shoes are notoriously uncomfortable, they spend hours getting their hair, nails, and other body parts "done," the place mats must match the carpet in the dining room, and why? Looking Good!

The plain truth is that women want the toilet seat down because it is more aesthetically pleasing to them. It looks good to them when it is down rather than up. As empirical evidence, I offer the fact that most women will lower both parts of the toilet seat when they leave the bathroom, thus relegating themselves to having to raise the top part again when they return to use it again. This is obviously inconvenient, even to them, yet they will do it every time.

So, here's a clue for women: If you want men to happily leave the toilet seat down, say, "Honey, it would really make me happy if you would leave the toilet seat down. It makes the bathroom look better for me. Would you do that?"

And the clue for men: Leave the toilet seat (both parts) down, no matter what she says. It's really not worth any more discussion.
